In SA if there is enough demand they actually organize regular visits to your office, school or university to make things easier too. Can’t imagine why they’ve become so regimented in the UK, but suspect staffing shortage might be an issue? Or perhaps just the usual over-bureaucratization. Either way, they can’t expect to grow their volunteer base with a complex system like the one you describe. They stopped the drop-in the system a while ago, it is compulsory to have an appointment nowadays and the amount of personal questions on the sheet you have to fill in has to be seen to be believed!
