Who are these headteachers who say basic arithmetic is unnecessary in primary schools? No wonder so many modern teenagers are unable to subtract or add basic numbers correctly in their jobs as tellers and cashiers. Schools are supposed to properly prepare students for adult life, and in the UK they appear to be failing. Here is something to think about: if you show me an empty map of the world I can accurately name every one of the 196 countries in the right place. Same happens if you show me the flags. Never thought others to be stupid for not being able to do the same. People have different abilities. I can’t do my maths right, I don’t master it just like most people would struggle with an empty map.
